Promote the Issues

Sharing your opinion is a crucial strategy for raising awareness about women's issues in Connecticut. To get started, consider writing a letter to the editor or contacting your legislators.

Letters to the editor are a great way to raise awareness about gender issues. Your letter can be a reaction to an article or op-ed you read in the paper or a response to current events in your community. You can also contact your local representative expressing your concerns about current policy issues. For ideas, check out CWEALF's Legislative Priorities.

If you choose to write a letter, keep these simple reminders in mind:

  • Include your contact information. The paper will verify that you are the author of your letter before publishing it.
  • Be brief. Letters that are less than 250 words are more likely to be published.
  • Stay on subject. Limit the number of points you make; your letter will be more convincing.
  • Make your point early. Editors may cut out parts of your letter. They are more likely to cut the end of a letter than the beginning, so make your main point in the first paragraph.
  • Make it relevant. Your letter should be timely, reflect current events, and connect the issue with your local community.
